In patients with carotid artery stenosis, Eilenberg et al. [76] reported that circulating neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and MMP-9/NGAL are associated with plaque vulnerability and that statin treatment could contribute to plaque stabilization by reducing circulating NGAL and MMP-9/NGAL levels. This evidence concerns the gene LCN2 and coronary atherosclerosis measurement.
