Autophagy is very pivotal for performing housekeeping activities in neuronal cells and preventing the buildup of misfolded aggregates in neurons, which can lead to neuronal dysfunction such as Aβ in Alzheimer disease [11], PRNPSC in prion diseases [12], SNCA in Parkinson disease [13,14], and mSOD1 in familial Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (fALS) [15]. Here, SNCA is linked to early-onset autosomal dominant Alzheimer disease.
