Two years later, Bellodi et al. reported a study of noticeable clinical importance which showed that Imatinib treatment of CML cells induced cytoprotective autophagy and that the inhibition of autophagy, by using pharmacological (Chloroquine, Bafilomycin A1) or RNA interference of essential autophagy genes (ATG5, ATG7) potentiated the drug efficiency not only in CML blast crisis cell lines and CML primary cells but also in leukemic stem cells isolated from patients [324,325,326]. This evidence concerns the gene ATG5 and chronic myelogenous leukemia, BCR-ABL1 positive.
