TNF and glaucoma: The onset of the inflammatory response in glaucoma is hypothesized to be triggered by an altered crosstalk between RGCs and microglial cells, thus increasing the release of pro‐inflammatory mediators, namely tumor necrosis factor (TNF), interleukin‐1β (IL‐1β), reactive oxygen species (ROS), and nitric oxide (NO) (Almasieh, Wilson, Morquette, Cueva Vargas, & Di Polo, 2012; Chua et al., 2012; Lee, 2013; Madeira, Boia, Santos, Ambrósio, & Santiago, 2015).
