IL6 and infection: Additionally, the discovery of a regulatory role for IFITM3 in IL-6 production [43•], along with a recent report that IFITM3 is a negative feedback inhibitor of the type I IFN induction pathway [68], may suggest that IFITM3 is a broad regulator of inflammation and that it may play important roles in infections in which the balance between pathogen control versus tissue pathology is determined by these cytokines.
