We could show that high PD‐L1 expression in the peripheral blood of OSCC patients is associated with inferior survival and parameters of increased tumor progression.7 However, OSCC patients and healthy control persons showed no difference in PD‐L1 expression in peripheral blood.7 Therefore, the degree of PD‐L1 expression could be associated with a status of systemic immune tolerance that is preexisting and independent of the existence of a malignancy. This evidence concerns the gene CD274 and neoplasm.
