The possible involvement of this gene in the psychopathology of schizophrenia has been discussed since 201248 and has been shown to involve immunologic processes, glutamatergic neurotransmission, and homeostasis of essential metals in the brain.50,51,52,53 In the literature,50 it has been hypothesized that the association between SLC39A8 and schizophrenia may be associated with its involvement in proinflammatory immune response during brain development. This evidence concerns the gene SLC39A8 and schizophrenia.
