Thus, nonresponsive anemia in the LNS group might be due to poor iron absorption or utilization attributable to factors including: antinutritional compounds, e.g., phenolic compounds in the predominantly plant-based diet reducing iron absorption (65–68); gastric acid hyposecretion (69, 70) reducing iron absorption (71, 72); and hepcidin-induced inhibition of iron absorption and transport due to inflammation (73, 74).
