Prudente et al. reported that SNP rs2989924 (A-953G) located in the promoter of AQP7 gene was associated with obesity and secondary development of T2DM in Caucasians, and they further demonstrated this SNP to be functional because it caused decreased transcriptional activity by impairing C/EBPβ binding to the promoter region and was coupled to decreased AQP7 mRNA abundance in adipose tissue [23]. Here, AQP7 is linked to obesity due to melanocortin 4 receptor deficiency.
