CASP1 and infection: The first study on the potential effect of statins on infection by M. tuberculosis was performed 18 years ago by Montero et al., where it was observed that fluvastatin slightly induces the release of TH1 cytokines and promotes the activation of caspase 1; by infecting peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) with M. tuberculosis and treating them with fluvastatin, this stimulation was synergistic, yielding concentrations up to 10 times higher than those of TH1 cytokines and caspase 1.
