Severalstudies have shown miR-126 to support endothelial homeostasis andangiogenesis,12,13,15 which is mediated by SPRED1 and PIK3R2 to promote VEGFsignaling.15 In addition,miR-126 activates survival kinases such as ERK and Akt by downregulating its targetsand promoting the action of VEGF.26 Osipova et al reported in their study that urinary miR-126levels were reduced in the patients with diabetes; however, circulating miR-126levels in plasma showed no significant difference.1 The gene discussed is SPRED1; the disease is diabetes mellitus.
