GJA1 and chronic kidney disease: Immunohistochemistry showed that both Cx40 and Cx43 became more lateralized with a significantly increased protein content of total Cx43 (0.01 ± 0.01 in CKD vs. 0.15 ± 0.01 in Sham, n = 6 per group, P = 0.000) and a significantly decreased protein content of Cx40 (0.07 ± 0.01 in CKD vs. 0.12 ± 0.01 in Sham, n = 6 per group, P = 0.000) in the CKD group compared with the sham group (Figure 8).
