This synergistic effect may be explained by several simultaneously operating mechanisms: 1) induction of immunogenic cell death by cisplatin, leading to release of several immunomodulators from dying tumor cells [31]; 2) secretion of TNFα by the SLP vaccine-induced T cells in the tumor microenvironment and increased sensitivity of tumor cells to TNFα-mediated apoptosis in the presence of cisplatin [18], 3) selective depletion of immunosuppressive immature myeloid cells by chemotherapy as was shown for carboplatin and paclitaxel [32]. The gene discussed is TNF; the disease is neoplasm.
