Interestingly, TNF is located within chromosome 6p21.3 linked to parasitemia and mild malaria in humans, and the corresponding chromosomal region in mice is genetically linked to mild malaria and cerebral malaria (Burt et al., 1999; Hernandez-Valladares et al., 2004; Ohno & Nishimura, 2004).
