Treatment with Trimetazidine, an anti-ischemic drug and metabolic modulator endowed with neuroprotective properties, attenuated retinal damage and RGC death in an acute glaucoma animal model by activating the Nrf2-pathway (Wan et al., 2017), further suggesting that pharmacologic induction of the Nrf2-pathway may represent a novel neuroprotective tool in retinal diseases. This evidence concerns the gene NFE2L2 and Abnormal retinal morphology.
