Moreover, alteration of phosphorylation levels of acute phase proteins (SAA as the clearest example in our data) and proteins involved in coagulation / platelet degranulation (fibrinogen α and kininogen 1) could indicate an increased adhesion of the phosphorylated form of these proteins to endothelial tissue or to erythrocyte debris generated by hemolysis, a common effect of babesiosis.
