INS and atherosclerosis: Hamer et al.10 followed up 2,422men and women for over 8 years as part of the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing.These authors showed that the MHO phenotype is relatively unstable, since 44.5% ofMHO individuals transitioned into an unhealthy state, and emphasized that theprogress to an unhealthy state was linked with a significant increase inWC.10 Visceral obesity isassociated with pro-inflammatory activity and increased production of adiponectinlinked to deterioration of insulin sensitivity, increased risk of diabetes,dyslipidemia, hypertension, atherosclerosis, and higher mortality.10
