For example, myeloma cells derived from a patient late in disease course (from a pleural effusion) expressed much higher levels of MHC-I (an inhibitory ligand) and lower levels of MICA (a ligand for the NK cell activating receptor, NKG2D) and were much more resistant to NK cell-mediated lysis than myeloma cells derived earlier from the bone marrow of the same patient (16).
