Because increased expression of IL-6 and IL-22 are associated with IBD in patients (60, 61), our findings here pinpoint a cross-regulation of ATF3 for intestinal immunity maintenance, between IL-22-induced STAT3 activation in gut epithelial cells and IL-6-induced STAT3 activation in CD45+ cells especially Th17 cells (summarized in Figure 8E). This evidence concerns the gene IL22 and inflammatory bowel disease.
