Contradictory findings show that NEAT1 is downregulated in some cancers (e.g., acute promyelocytic leukemia (Zeng et al., 2014)) and is a downstream target of the tumor suppressor p53, thus proposing that NEAT1 works as a potential tumor suppressor (Adriaens et al., 2016; Idogawa et al., 2017; Mello et al., 2017).
