A recent article reported that VPA induces hepatic steatosis by upregulating clusters of differentiation 36 (CD36) and diacylglycerol acyltransferase 2 (DGAT2) in HepG2 cells and livers of C57B/6J mice; these results are likely attributable to increased peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma or inhibition of the mitogen-activated protein kinase kinase (MEK)-extracellular regulated kinase (ERK) pathway, respectively [37]. This evidence concerns the gene DGAT2 and fatty liver disease.
