Two more downregulated genes have been associated with neuronal function: ST8 Alpha-N-Acetyl-Neuraminide Alpha-2,8-Sialyltransferase 1 (st8sia1: -6.4) has been associated with multiple sclerosis, as well as with metabolism of membrane-bound sphingolipids, important for cell adhesion and growth of cultured malignant cells [68]. This evidence concerns the gene ST8SIA1 and multiple sclerosis.
