CA2 and schizophrenia: Area CA2 has recently been recognized for its role in processing long-term memories containing socially relevant information in rodents (Alexander et al., 2016; Hitti and Siegelbaum, 2014; Pagani et al., 2015; Smith et al., 2016). Interestingly, a mouse model of schizophrenia that shows hypoactive CA2 pyramidal cells in vitro also shows impaired social behavior (Piskorowski et al., 2016).
