BDNF and schizophrenia: Post-mortem studies have reported reduced levels of BDNF and its cognate receptor, Tropomysosin-related kinase B (TrkB) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and hippocampus of individuals with schizophrenia (Thompson Ray et al., 2011; Reinhart et al., 2015), suggesting a role of BDNF-TrkB signaling in the illness.
