By limiting the available pool of telomerase RNPs via sequestering hTR and hTR-containing complexes, the HIST1H1C RNA-hTR interaction might constitute a tumor suppressor mechanism to curb telomere elongation even after upregulation of TERT expression, and thus could contribute to the prevention of malignant transformation, for example in the adult stem cell compartment.
