In the present candidate-gene study, we tested the hypothesis of association between 14 variants of SLC2A1 (rs12407920 C/T, rs2297976 G/T, rs710221 G/A, rs2086856 A/G, rs12130264 C/T, rs841847 C/T, rs841853 C/A, rs3729548 C/T, rs841855 G/A, rs3768029 C/T, rs12071418 C/G, rs3820549 C/G, rs3820546 G/A, rs11537641 G/A) and the progression of type 2 diabetes (i.e., from healthy status to diabetes without nephropathy and then, to diabetes leading to nephropathy). Here, SLC2A1 is linked to type 2 diabetes mellitus.
