CD4 count, representing the immunity status of the patient, was overall positively correlated with “large” phenotypes, suggesting that larger cells, more capsule, and giant cells are produced during earlier stages of infection, and overall negatively correlated with “small” phenotypes, suggesting that micro cells and shed capsule may be a later response during infection as immune function declines (Fig. 4C and Fig. 5).
