Here we report that in the absence of stromal-SPARC, glucose levels are increased in cancer cells with the concomitant upregulation of Hk2, the mitochondrial-associated high affinity hexokinase that catalyzes the first committed step in glucose metabolism, i.e., the ATP-dependent phosphorylation of glucose to glucose-6-phosphate (G6P) [33]. The gene discussed is SPARC; the disease is cancer.
