As far as nephroprotective mechanisms of allicin in experimental DN are concerned, recent studies have shown that this garlic derivative partially reverses the increased expression of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) and the activation (i.e., phosphorylation) of its downstream target extracellular signal-regulated kinase 1⁄2 (ERK1/2) that drive renal epithelial-mesenchymal transition and fibrosis [11]. This evidence concerns the gene TGFB1 and liver dysplastic nodule.
