Nevertheless, as mutations in the TERT promoter enhance TERT expression, which is associated with poor disease‐free and melanoma‐specific survival (Nagore et al., 2016), low levels of TERT promoter mutation in cfDNA relative to other activating mutations may be harnessed to delineate patients with transcriptionally active TERT. Overall, our results underscore the need for further studies into ctDNA biology prior to its clinical implementation. The gene discussed is TERT; the disease is melanoma.
