Plasticity of neocortical SST+ interneurons is poorly explored and it is unknown whether sensory deprivation can modify the strength of their output synapses (Scheyltjens and Arckens, 2016; Urban-Ciecko and Barth, 2016), but reduced SST inhibition onto PV+ interneurons and/or increased SST inhibition onto pyramidal neurons are intriguing possible mechanisms that could contribute to the enhanced intracortical inhibition following brief MD. The gene discussed is SST; the disease is Menkes disease.
