Thus, the acquisition of a more mesenchymal phenotype by cancer cells has been associated with deficiencies in the MHC I antigen presentation pathway [44,45,46,47], downregulation of E-Cadherin [37], which could be critical for the recognition of cancer cells by tumor infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) expressing [48,49], hyperactivity of TGF-beta signaling [45], or increased expression of programmed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) [46,50,51].
