GAS5 and neoplasm: Given that GAS5 is down-regulated and miR-34a is up-regulated in our study, tumorigenesis may be in such a case due to sponging of miR-34a by GAS5, where under-expression of GAS5 in the rapidly dividing cancer cells causes release of the inhibition of miR-34a on its tumor suppressor targets, allowing for further tumor progression.
