Chen et al. (2000) previously demonstrated that sAC functions as a HCO3− sensor in many biological systems. More recently, HCO3− has been shown to increase cAMP production via sAC stimulation in corals (Barott et al., 2013). Thus, we surmise that reduced HCO3− secretion from CF lung epithelial cells results in decreased luminal pH, which leads to decreased levels of cAMP production in bacterial cells. Here, ADCY10 is linked to cystic fibrosis.
