These data indicate two aspects of the five protein panel: (1) the alterations of protein levels of these proteins in insulin-responsive tissues suggest a potential utility of the five proteins as a protein profile that can represent T2DM-associated mitochondrial functions; and (2) no associations of three upregulated proteins (SORT1, CALR, and RAB1A) with mitochondria in T2DM patients, as well as their alterations in protein levels, have previously been shown. This evidence concerns the gene SORT1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus.
