Interestingly, evidence for an interplay between altered mitochondrial function, impaired mitochondrial Ca2+ homeostasis and the MCU complex has also been shown to occur in an in vivo model where inhibition of the mitochondrial calcium uniporter was able to rescue dopaminergic neurons in pink1−/− zebrafish64 thus, our results enforce the link between altered mitochondrial Ca2+ handling and the pathogenesis of PD. This evidence concerns the gene PINK1 and Parkinson disease.
