We found CD163+ macrophages present in the parenchyma in close association with neurons and not associated with any blood vessels in 1 of 4 high inflammation controls (25%), 2 of 33 low inflammation controls (6%), 2 of 23 (9%) low inflammation schizophrenia cases and importantly in 6 of 14 (43%) high inflammation schizophrenia cases (p = 0.0096, Fisher’s exact test). The gene discussed is CD163; the disease is schizophrenia.
