Congenitally missing teeth can occur in an isolated form or in a relationship with some syndromes such as cleft lip, cleft palate (or both) [11], Down-, Rieger- and Book- syndromes [12], Witkop syndrome associated with MSX1 gene mutations [13] or ectodermal dysplasia with the most common X-linked inheritance are caused by mutations in EDA gene (ectodysplasin), EDAR gene (ectodysplasin A-receptor) or EDARADD gene (EDAR associated death domain) [14]. This evidence concerns the gene EDAR and cleft lip.
