The EMPA-REG OUTCOME study examined the effects of the SGLT2 inhibitor, empagliflozin on cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in individuals with Type 2 diabetes at high cardiovascular risk and reported a 14% relative risk reduction in the primary endpoint (death from cardiovascular causes, non-fatal myocardial infarction, or non-fatal stroke) with empagliflozin compared to placebo [23].
