Half of pregnant Indian women are anaemic (Hb < 110 g/L) according to a recent national survey (Government of India, 2017), which is troubling, given that anaemia during pregnancy is associated with higher risk of low birth weight, preterm birth, and perinatal mortality (Rahman et al., 2016), as well as a higher risk of maternal mortality (Daru et al., 2018). This evidence concerns the gene GSTM1 and anemia (phenotype).
