A genome-wide association study (GWAS) conducted in 2007, confirmed that rs9939609 variant located within the first intron of the FTO gene predisposes European populations to diabetes through an effect on body mass index (BMI) [2, 3], while other reports from South Asian population showed that FTO gene variants increase the risk of type 2 diabetes independent of BMI [4]. The gene discussed is FTO; the disease is diabetes mellitus.
