Pigment epithelium‐derived factor (PEDF) is a naturally occurring glycoprotein secreted from the apical side of RPE cells.16, 17, 18 It has broad bioactive properties for the health of normal retina, including neuroprotective,19, 20, 21 antiangiogenic 22, 23, 24 and anti‐senescent functions.25, 26 Local expression of PEDF is decreased significantly in the RPE of patients with AMD, and this is responsible in part for the pathogenesis of the disorder.27 This evidence concerns the gene SERPINF1 and age-related macular degeneration.
