The following serological parameters can be searched for in order to establish the serological progress of the EBV infection and especially to detect/rule out an acute infection: non-specific heterophile IgM antibodies (anti-HA IgM), IgM antibodies to viral capsid antigens (anti-VCA IgM), IgG antibodies to viral capsid antigens (anti-VCA IgG), IgG antibodies to EBV nuclear antigens (anti-EBNA IgG) and IgG antibodies to EBV early antigens (anti-EA IgG) (Fig. 2).
