AKR1B1 has also been shown to be involved in EMT, where its overexpression is associated with the upregulation of EMT markers in lens epithelial cells [52] and the selective absence of AKR1B1 methylation in mesenchymal cell lines, consistent with the potential role in breast cancer of EMT recently reported in basal breast cancers [53].
