With the genetic heterogeneity of congenital cataracts, more than 30 genes on different chromosomes are known to cause the disorder, which include crystallins genes, lens specific connexins genes, major intrinsic protein or aquaporine genes, cytoskeletal structural proteins genes, paired-like homeodomain transcription factor 3 genes, avian musculoaponeurotic fibrosarcoma, and heat shock transcription factor 4 [4]. This evidence concerns the gene PITX3 and early-onset non-syndromic cataract.
