Notably, although only a small proportion of total PTBP1 appeared to be cleaved 6–8 hours-post infection, it is likely that the majority of PTBP1 is not associated with viral replication in infected cells and only the PTBP1 found within HRV16 replication complexes would be targeted for cleavage, allowing for local concentration effects to drive functionality.
