Notwithstanding these pre-existing links between DUSP22 methylation and nutrition, the presence of higher DUSP22 methylation in the blood and brain of schizophrenia patients not exposed to famine also suggest that aberrant DUSP22 methylation is more generally involved in the neurodevelopmental processes underlying the etiology of schizophrenia.
