Since impaired mitophagy is strongly linked to neurodegenerative diseases, it is tempting to speculate that, due to altered binding of mutant p97 to UBXD1, p97-linked myopathy and neurodegeneration might not only be a consequence of disrupted lysophagy, but might also result from impaired mitophagic clearance of damaged mitochondria. This evidence concerns the gene VCP and myopathy.
