At this point, it is not clear how IFN-γ becomes induced in sanroque mice, since the Ifng mRNA is rather strongly regulated by AU-rich elements (AREs), which are recognized by ARE-binding proteins like TTP, AUF, or HUR proteins, and genetic deletion of these AREs has been demonstrated to also cause a lupus-like phenotype in mice (47, 48). The gene discussed is IFNG; the disease is systemic lupus erythematosus.
