Atherosclerotic plaque progression is associated with an increase in M1 pro‐inflammatory macrophages compared to the number of anti‐inflammatory M2 macrophages.36 Our results suggest that BMP‐2 promotes inflammatory responses by interfering with the resolution of inflammatory responses as it obstructs the differentiation of macrophages into the M2 anti‐inflammatory macrophages and this way contribute to the development of atherosclerosis. This evidence concerns the gene BMP2 and atherosclerosis.
